Public ProgramsBrownie Girl Scout Hike BadgeThursday, March 7, 6:00–7:30 p.m., Annett Nature Center Come learn about gear you need to bring on a hike, places to hike in the area, and being prepared. Take a hike around the park while learning about the critters that call this area home. Steps 1–5. Registration deadline: March 4, 2013. 2013 Day Camp InformationHunter Education CourseThursday, March 7, 6:00–9:00 p.m. & Hunters born after January 1, 1972 must complete an approved education course before purchasing a hunting license in Iowa. Participants must be 12 years old by March 9, 2013 and attend both sessions to receive certification. Homework is required and homework packets must be picked up by students at least one week prior to class. Lunch is provided on Saturday. Cosponsored by the Warren County Izaak Walton League and the WCCB. There is no fee for this class. Online registration is required. Turkey Hunting WorkshopSaturday, March 9, 9:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m., Annett Nature Center Hunters of all ages and skill levels are welcome to learn and sharpen techniques and safety skills under the direction of WCCB staff and invited professionals. Learn about turkey biology, calling, and hunting. Explore all aspects of turkey hunting, including equipment, safety, biology and methods. Weather permitting, portions of the workshop will be outside — dress for the weather. Participate in problem solving scenarios which will make your hunt more successful and enjoyable. Blue Bird HousesSunday, March 10, 1:00–3:00 p.m., Annett Nature Center Bluebirds, the familiar and colorful harbingers of spring, will be returning by the end of the month. Welcome them back with a new home. All lumber is durable cedar and has been pre-cut. Participants will receive materials and a helping hand. All ages are welcome, but children will need the help of an adult. Each birdhouse kit is $10 and you may put together as many as you like or take them home to give as gifts. Easter Egg Hunt Goes GlobalSaturday, March 23, 10:00 a.m.–Noon, Annett Nature Center Having problems finding those Easter Eggs? Come out to the Annett Nature Center and learn how use a hand held Global Positioning System unit for some fun and egg hunting. Arrive anytime between 10 am and Noon to receive some basic instructions and then put your new knowledge to use. There will be an “easy egg hunt” and one that is more challenging. Free Program! Earth Day Activities Every Weekend in April!Digital Scavenger HuntMonday, April 1, 8:00 a.m. through Sunday, April 28, 3:00 p.m., Get outside and enjoy spring by coming out to the ANC to participate in our Digital Scavenger Hunt. Dollar-A-Day Boys: A Musical Tribute to the Civilian Conservation CorpsFriday, April 5, 7:00 p.m., Annett Nature Center (time not yet confirmed) Michigan based author Bill Jamerson will present a music and storytelling program about the Civilian Conservation Corps. The hour-long program will include stories, video, reading excerpts from his novel and playing original songs about the CCC with his guitar. Jamerson has presented his program at CCC reunions, and at state and national parks around the country. The presentation is as entertaining as it is important; as honest as it is fun. It’s about people both ordinary and extraordinary, with stories of wit, charm and strength. This program is free, but reservations are required. Earth’s RecyclersSunday, April 14, 1:00 p.m., Annett Nature Center Celebrate Earth Day with a hike at the Annett Nature Center. Learn about some of Nature’s Recyclers and get your shoes muddy. Become a recycler yourself and make a rug to place your muddy shoes on. Anyone can join us for the hike but supplies will limit the number of weaving projects. This program is free, but reservations are required. Donations of Old T-shirts needed. Webelos Scout Activity Badge #13, NaturalistThursday, April 18, 6:00–7:30 p.m., Annett Nature Center Spend the evening becoming a naturalist. Learn about bird flyways and meet a couple of the birds that use them. Learn about aquatic ecosystems and wetlands. Find out what a producer, consumer, and decomposer are and identify them in the wetland. Identify poisonous plants and help clean up the park. Requirements 13: 4, 6, 7, 9.
